The
return of Leonids promises a spectacle! It will be magnificent sight to see. Predictions
are that this years Leonid meteor storm will outshine the storm in 1966, that is thought
to be the best so far (over 150.000 shooting stars per an hour).
Apart from
its unique beauty, the storm gives one an unique opportunity for a variety of different
methods of observation. The sample of observed meteors enables a statistic derivation of
data, because of very high frequency. The storm will also provide data for checking
physical theories and models in meteor astronomy.
An expedition
to Mongolia has been planned. We estimated that Mongolia would one of the best locations
to observe, because of its geographical position (the storm could only be seen from that
part of the world), climate, low population density (low light polution)...
The
expedition is of international character. It will be from 3. november to 1.december 1998.
We are
looking for sponsorship.
