INFORMATION LETTER  ON BALKAN ASTRONOMY

Dear collegues,

We hope that 2002 is at least somewhat better for our readers than the last year. In this issue of our newsletter, we have announcements for several (hopefully) interesting events, related to space science. But, we have to begin with an excuse. ILBA7 contains a small mistake: the event which will take place in Ukraine IS a Scientific meeting and IS NOT a summer school. We have a letter from the organizers pointing this detail, and we present them (and to our readers) our excuses.

scientific meeting

The first scientific meeting to be announced in this issue of ILBA is devoted to the problem of international collaboration in astronomy. It will be held in Moscow, and details are given in the first announcement, reproduced below.

The conference "International Collaboration in Astronomy: Actual state and Prospective" forms part of the program of EAAS 6th General Meeting. This Announcement containes information about the scientific program of the conference. The program of the Meeting administrative sessions and of attached scientific events will be announced later.

The conference scientific program includes discussion of actual situation with international collaboration in astronomy and of its prodpects. The conference will focus on collaboration between NIS scientists as well as on NIS-Eastern Europe collaboration. Besides, collaboration of NIS astronomers with their colleagues in INTAS countries, USA and on global scale will, of course, be discussed.

Presentations of scientific results achieved in the frame of collaborative projects, by international teams or individual authors, based on data obtained by collective efforts are planned. Special reviews of the largest international projects will be given. Particular attention will be given to space missions with purely astronomical as well as astronomical and geophysical goals.

The conference program will include, apart from review talks, a number of short oral presentations and poster which will be reviewed and discussed on poster session. A special poster session will be dedicated to each of the main fields of astronomy and astrophysics.

A special session on astronomical education is scheduled. "Lessons" and prospects of international collaboration will be widely discussed.

Guest investigators on SOHO ESA and NASA have jointly announced the openings of posts of guest investigators in the SOHO mission. The full text is reproduced in the following.

Date: Monday, January 28, 2002 8:32 PM SOHO / Sun-Earth Connection Guest Investigator Programme AO On 28 January 2002, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have announced a SOHO and Sun-Earth Connection Guest Investigator (GI) Programme, respectively, inviting the worldwide solar physics community to participate in the acquisition and analysis of SOHO data (ESA-SCI(2002)2 and NRA 02-OSS-01).

Letters of Intent are requested before 15 March 2002. Due date for proposals is 17 May 2002. U.S. proposers should follow the format and other directions in NRA 02-OSS-01. Non-U.S. GIs will have to obtain funding for their research from their national or other international institutions.

information on meetings

We are all aware of the fact that some announcements of scientific meetings (that is congresses, workshops, schools…) are not sufficiently widespread. One of the best sources of information on this subject is maintained on a web site related to the U.K. Institute of Physics. The internet address is http://www.physicsweb.org/events/. The meetings are grouped according to category and time, and the announcements go several years into the future. There are currently postings for some events which will take place in 2006!

a bright comet

Most if not all readers of ILBA have seen the extra-bright comet Hale-Bopp, and the one which preceeded it by a couple of months. It seems that we are lucky again, but not to the same extent: another bright comet is visible these days. Its name is Ikeya-Zhang, and we have reproduced below the results of observation by a Yugoslav amateur:
