Dear collegues,

You will notice that the preceeding issue of ILBA was released just two weeks ago.The reason for the quick appearance of this issue is that news of several meetings devoted to various issues of space science were released, so the editors would like to communicate you this information.

Subject: SOHONEWS Europeans invited to participate in Solar Dynamics Observatory

Date: Monday, February 11, 2002 4:59 PM

The European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA are collaborating on the 'International Living with a Star' (ILWS) programme that will study the behaviour of the Sun and its effect on our planet. European involvement is now solicited, in particular at payload level, for the first NASA contribution to the LWS programme: the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Notice of Intent is due by 20 February 2002, with proposals due by 24 April 2002.

Serbian-Bulgarian meeting

Preparations for the third meeting in this series are actively under way. According to available information, it will be held May 13-15 in the mountain resort of Guletschitsa. The scientific program will be organized in a small number of oral presentations and a larger number of posters. Scientific and other details concerning the organization are currently being discussed. For details, contact either dr.Milan Dimitrijevi} (mdimitrijevic@aob.bg.ac.yu) at the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade or Prof.G.Ivanov from the Institute of Physics in Sofia (bgyu3@phys.uni-sofia.bg).

“JOURNEES 2002” in Romania

Our collegues in Romania are very active. Included below is the announcement for a meeting which they are organizing later this year. This meeting is already announced on the web site of the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

JOURNEES 2002

SYSTEMES DE REFERENCE SPATIO-TEMPORELS

"ASTROMETRY FROM GROUND AND FROM SPACE"

25-28 September, 2002, Bucharest (Romania)

The Journees 2002 will be organised in Bucharest (Romania) jointly by the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy, and Observatoire de Paris. It will include an open meeting of the IAU Division 1 WG "Future development of ground-based astrometry".

********

SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

The Journées 2002 "Systèmes de référence spatio-temporels", with the sub-title "Astrometry from ground and space", will be the fourteenth conference in this series, organized in Paris each year from 1988 to 1992 and alternately, since 1994, in Paris and other European cities, as follows: Warsaw (1995), Paris (1996), Prague (1997), Paris (1998), Dresden (1999), Paris (2000) and Brussels (2001).

The purpose of this series of conferences is to discuss the problems, from the concepts and realizations of space and time reference systems, to the scientific interpretations of precise observations referred to these systems.

The problems to be discussed within Journées 2002 are related to the reference systems and also, more generally, to astrometry from ground and space. The Journées 2002 will thus include, as usual, sessions related to space and time reference systems and Earth rotation and will moreover include a special session devoted to an open meeting of the IAU Working Group "Future developments of ground-based astrometry". This special session will discuss the scientific programs that can still be successfully performed with ground-based instruments. A session will also consider the future space astrometric programs.

Asteroids, Comets and Meteors 2002

Some details about this meeting are given in the following announcement. You will notice that it is not held in our region of Europe, but we have decided to include it in this issue of ILBA as there is a considerable number of astronomers, both professional and amateur, engaged in work in this field.
