ILBA 13

The last issue of ILBA was released at the end of July. Then came the period of summer holidays and scientific meetings. All the meetings which we have announced in ILBA12 were held as planned. Work is restarting after the summer break, so in this issue we have several short announcements.

One of ILBA editors had an invited lecture at the 12th International School on Condensed Matter Physics, held in Varna. The school is organized every second year by the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (www.issp.bas.bg). ILBA editors have met again in September in Sofia. At the meeting, it was concluded that the effort “invested” in making ILBA is giving good results, because the readership is slowly growing, and an increasing number of colegues (especially the younger) are turning to ILBA as a reliable and quick source of information. This is precisely the basic idea with which ILBA was launched two years ago.

According to information from the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade, the Proceedings of the Third Bulgarian-Serbian Astronomical Meeting are being prepared for publication as quickly as possible. It is hoped that the book will appear before the end of the year. In the meantime, do not forget the photographs from the meeting. The url on which they can be found is:

The Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade has (now for several months) a new director. It is dr.Zoran Knezevic, a specialist in minor planets and celestial mechanics. ILBA editors wish Zoran all the best on his new duty, and to the former director, dr.Milan Dimitrijevic we wish a successful continuation of scientific work, uninterrupted by administrative burden.

A preliminary program of the forthcoming conference is posted at http://www.matf.bg.ac.yu/katedre/astronomija/konferencija.htm. The conference will be held in the Yugoslav Chamber of Commerce, which is in the center of Belgrade on October 17-20. According to latest available information, the scientific program is nearly complete, and it will be definitively made public on October 5.

The Society of Astronomers of Serbia (SAS) is a professional grouping of people engaged in all kinds of astronomical research, as well as teaching of astronomy in Serbia. SAS has recently thoroughly updated its web site,which is at the url www.das.org.yu . In the opinion of ILBA editors, the site is excellent, and we strongly recommend it as an good and good-looking source of information on astronomy in Serbia. As an example of the effort invested in making the presen-tation, note that in pictures of constellations all the stars are coloured according to their spectral classes. The SOHO mission continues to deliver data on solar phenomena and sun-earth links.Apart its purely scientific results,SOHO takes pictures which are extremely useful in teaching astronomy,and in giving lectures to general audiences.We would like to draw your attention to http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/hotshots where you can find excellent photographs of various solar phenomena,as well as of sun-grazing comets.
