INFORMATION LETTER  ON BALKAN ASTRONOMY

Dear collegues,

This issue of ILBA is somewhat unusual. You may dully ask why, and the answer is that it contains an unusual contribution - a report by our young colegue Miss. Marija Vucelja from her summer visit to the Weizmann institute in Israel. Just a word about Marija - she is a student of theoretical physics at the Faculty of Physics in Beograd, and she had the opportunity to visit Weizmann in 2002.

There are three more contributions in this issue: the announcement of the Summer School in Ukraina this coming August, for our readers in Serbia and Montenegro a note on the preparations for the Astronomical Olympiad and an in-formation on recent observations of the transit of Mercury and the solar eclip-se.

Summer practice at Weizmann Institute

Last summer I was a student of The Karyn Kupicnet Summer School at Weizmann Institute. The school gathered 30 international students interested in various sciences: biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, physical chemistry and medicine. At Weizmann Institute one can do research in these fields and also there is the Feinberg Graduate School that each year enrolls few hundred postgraduate students. The Institute is situated on a large area in Rehovot, a small town near Tel Aviv.

There were five participants from Serbia and Montenegro: Ivan Stanic, Ilija Uzelac and I were there for physics and there were two mathematicians: Dusan Djukic and Rade Stanojevic. Other students came from Turkey, USA, Russia, India, England and Israel.

The Institute facilities and labs have the latest equipment and the libraries are "endless". Our hosts were very pleasant and helpful... besides the departments we worked on, we were welcome to visit and ask questions to other scientists and groups there. We also had various tours around the campus. The symbol of Weizmann Institute is an accelerator, today used for C14 archeological dating.

I worked at the Department of Physics of Complex Systems in Prof. Gregory Falkovich group. Our goal was to research how rain droplets form in clouds due to gravitational collisions. Rain can start if one has big enough droplets to reach the ground. Vapor condensation produces small droplets, they collide with each other and coalesce. One of the main forces that cause droplet collisions is gravity. Droplets that have different sizes fall with different velocities. The fall velocity depends on the flow properties that surround the droplet. If a droplet is small the flow is laminar, for a bigger droplet it becomes turbulent. The evolution of coalesce of droplets is described by the Smoluchowski equation. We numerically simulated that evolution. The tittle of my summer project was "Evaluation of Droplet Distribution in Clouds due to Gravitational Collisions".

My colleges from Belgrade and Nis University worked on: Ivan Stanic "Locking a Diode Laser to an External Cavity", Ilija Uzelac "Simulation of Singe Scan 2D NMR", Rade Stanojevic "Morphisms Between Varieties" and Dushan Djukic "Adele Rings and Adele Groups".

Apart from science we went to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Cesaria and more. We toured the desert in jeeps, swam in the Dead Sea, visited museums. I found 3 months to be enough only for a glimpse of this exotic country were religions and cultures mix and myths intertwine with present.

Submission of proposals of projects for this event is finished. Proposals are now being sent from various countries to the organizers in Bulgaria,and the prospective observers are finalizing the preparations of their equipement. Two projects from Serbia and Montenegro have been proposed.

The Fourth G. Gamow's Odessa Astronomical Summer School "Astronomy and Beyond: Astrophysics, Cosmology and Astrobiology"

11-16 August, 2003, Odessa, Ukraine

This school intends to bring together experts on the subjects of astrophysics, cosmology and biology and with a number of interested astronomers and students, in order to discuss the most recent developments and problems in natural sciences.

Its organization will stress free discussion and exchange of ideas.

The main goal of the school is to review major experimental and theoretical efforts in modern astrophysics. The program will consist of a series of coordinated review lectures (45 min) accessible to students. Poster contributions presenting interesting new developments will be encouraged, Poster presentation (5-10 min). During ÓModern problems of Astrophysics and CosmologyÔ session you can present short reports (15-20 min).

Venue: The school will be held in the student summer hostel Chernomorka of the Odessa National University at the border of Odessa, near the Black Sea shore. It takes about 50-60 minutes to reach the center of the city.

THE ASTRONOMICAL OLYMPIAD - FOR READERS IN SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

In 2002.,a team representing Yugoslavia has achieved very good results on the Astronomical Olympiad. Preparations are starting for the next event which will be held in 2004. The preparations will be organized by DAS- The Society of Astronomers of Serbia. SOLAR ECLIPSE AND THE TRANSIT OF MERCURY

This spring we had the rare chance of witnessing two interesting easily visible celestial events: the transit of Mercury in front of the Sun, and a partial solar eclipse. In Serbia both events were duly observed by amateurs. "As usual" the extremely active group from Valjevo accumulated data on both events. For details write to bozin@tesla.rcub.bg.ac.yu. Both events were also observed from the Public Observatory in Beograd. For the transit of Mercury about 200 people visited the observatory and were given explanations. A small group of observers went out of Beograd and made a sequence of photos covering the event.They will be used for further analysis which is beginning. The Solar eclipse was observed from the hills owelooking the city of Vrsac in Vojvodina. Data were accumulated, and more about them in future issues of ILBA.
